Setting up email in outlook express

Many people have trouble setting up mail in Outlook Express ( Windows Mail if your using Vista ) or Outlook.

In this example I'll show you how to set up an email account in Outlook Express.

Ill use generic domain  names so you'll need to replace those with your actual domain name or email address.

To add a new email account you must first open Outlook Express then from the top menu go to

> Tools - Accounts - Add - Mail Account

And then follow the setup wizard.

Once you're done you can go back to your settings. From the top menu go to

> Tools - Accounts

Highlight the mail account that you just set up from the list and choose properties and you should be taken to a pop up window that looks like the following images.

The settings here are how you should have you mail set up to work correctly

Most people have a problem with the SMTP settings.

This can be for a few reasons.

  1. You did not check the box that says "My server requires authentication"

What this checkbox does is make sure that only people who have a valid account of the server can use it to send email. This setting therefore helps stop unwanted spam messages being sent from the server.
  2. Your ISP does not allow you to send mail via any SMTP server apart from their own.

Orange broadband customers and sometimes bt customers have this issue.
If this is you then use the SMTP server as provided by your ISP
